ATLANTA – The Georgia Republican Party, led by Chairman Sue P. Everhart, hosted the Presidents’ Day Dinner 2011 on Monday, March 21, at the Marriott Marquis in Downtown Atlanta. The event featured Special Guest Congressman Allen West of Florida’s 22nd Congressional District, and also included appearances by Senator Johnny Isakson, Governor Nathan Deal, former Governor Sonny Perdue, Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle, Congressman Tom Price, Speaker David Ralston, Georgia Republican Foundation Chairman Chip Pearson and many others.
After sweeping Republican gains across Georgia this past November, many of the speakers not only took the opportunity to express gratitude to a ballroom packed with supporters and elected officials for their continued efforts, but also stressed, as Chairman Everhart opened, that “as sweet as our victories were, the real work is now upon us!”
Congressman West, a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army and Atlanta native, drew a striking parallel between his return home and the Republican Party coming back to its roots. “We stand at a time where the American people are crying out for leadership,” he explained. “Many of us are operating in a confused state of who we are as Republicans…Ronald Reagan’s unwavering commitment to conservative beliefs united the nation, and this is where we must return.” Tipping his hat to Odysseus in Homer’s Odyssey, Congressman West explained that “the Republican Party must be the voice of reason to counter the call of the sirens. We have to enable our ‘ship of state’ to sail clear of the dangers [of a rapidly-growing government].”
