“The Powerful Ninth”
Posted by chris on Sep 12, 2012Congratulations to Georgia’s newest member of Congress, Representative Doug Collins of Gainesville, Georgia in Hall County who will represent the new Ninth Congressional District (GA-9) in Washington, D.C.! Collins represented Georgia House District 27 which includes portions of Hall, Lumpkin, and White counties. A former small business owner and current managing partner at Collins & Csider, Doug practices law in Gainesville while serving as a Chaplain in the U.S. Air Force Reserves. He is presently serving his third term in the Georgia House and was named one of Governor Deal’s Floor Leaders in January 2011. Doug and his wife Lisa, a school teacher, have been married 23 years. They have three children; a daughter, Jordan, 19 and two boys, Copelan, 15, and Cameron, 13. They are members of Lakewood Baptist Church in Gainesville.
The Ninth District, dubbed “The Powerful Ninth” by Secretary of State Brian Kemp for the many statewide Republican elected officials that reside within it, was formed in 2011 following the state-wide congressional re-districting. The GA 9th is composed of Republicans in the beautiful northeast Georgia counties of Banks, Dawson, Elbert, Fannin, Franklin, Gilmer, Habersham, Hall, Hart, Jackson, Lumpkin, Madison, Rabun, Stephens, Towns, Union, White and portions of Clarke, Forsyth, and Pickens counties. Formerly represented by Congressman Tom Graves, and Nathan Deal, the Ninth District is the most conservative Republican District in the nation with more state legislative and local-level elected Republicans than anywhere else.
Although Collins will face a democrat challenger in the fall, Republicans in the Ninth District already refer to him as, “Congressman-elect Collins.” Collins will be flanked by rock-solid conservative Republican Congressman Tom Graves representing the new 14th District to the west, and Congressman Paul Broun representing the new 10th District to the east. Collins’ constituents were formerly represented by Graves and Broun.
