Message from Chairman Sue P. Everhart – February 1, 2012

Chairman Sue Everhart

Dear Friends,

This month, President Obama formally asked Congress for yet-another increase in America’s debt ceiling. This time, Mr. Obama asked for an additional $1.2 Trillion, stating that “further borrowing is required to meet existing commitments.”

It has only been six months, as you may remember, since Obama authorized the ever-increasing debt ceiling – a $2.4 Trillion spending hike – and this would be Obama’s fifth time increasing America’s spending limit in just three years. If granted his request, America’s debt ceiling would be an astonishing $16.4 Trillion.

Under Barack Obama’s leadership, the debt ceiling has become more of an arbitrary inconvenience to the Democrats’ spending binges than a true cap on our government’s reckless borrowing abilities, as it was originally intended. Preferring to put the debt on the backs of our children and grandchildren, this Administration’s fiscal policies have been the very epitome of reckless governing.

Letter from Congressman Paul Broun

Congressman Paul Broun

Fellow Republicans,

In years past, I’ve chosen to forego attending President Obama’s annual State of the Union speech, and instead focused on interacting with my constituents through live, virtual town halls while I watched the speech in my office. This wasn’t out of disrespect, but because I wanted to see real-time responses from Georgians and to get their ideas for what might jumpstart our economy.

This year, I decided to attend the State of the Union in hopes that the president might have learned something from his failed policies and for a change in direction in this particular speech. I went with my colleagues to the House floor and awaited the president’s arrival, hoping that he would deliver a speech that would give us real, honest solutions to get our economy going and create jobs outside of government.

Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. We got nothing more than a campaign speech from President Obama that outlined his plans to further divide America for political gain. The State of the Union revolved around raising taxes, increasing spending, and enacting more government regulations – nearly all in conflict with the original intent of our Constitution.

House Speaker David Ralston Charges Small Business Committee with Red Tape Watch Initiative

ATLANTA—House Speaker David Ralston (R-Blue Ridge) today met with the Special Committee on Small Business Development and Job Creation and charged it with reviewing and evaluating Georgia’s regulatory environment. This effort, called Red Tape Watch, will be carried out throughout the 2012 legislative session.

“As I have traveled the state this year and met with small business owners, I have heard over and over again of their experiences dealing with oppressive and burdensome government regulations and red tape,” said House Speaker David Ralston. “This is a situation we cannot tolerate as our state recovers from the economic downturn and positions itself to be even more competitive in economic development.”

The Special Committee on Small Business Development and Job Creation, chaired by Rep. David Knight (R-Griffin), will meet periodically throughout the session to hear directly from small business owners. This committee was created by House Speaker David Ralston in January 2010 to solely focus on sustaining and growing small businesses in Georgia and thereby creating job opportunities for Georgians.

“The goal of this committee is to hear directly from small businesses about any burdensome or onerous state regulations that are on the books that may be outdated or unnecessary,” said Rep. Knight. “I believe this process will help identify opportunities for the General Assembly to help create an economic environment that fosters job creation and is conducive to the growth of strong small businesses throughout the state.”

Small business owners who would like to participate in this process but who cannot attend a hearing can fill out a form to voice their concerns at www.house.ga.gov/redtapewatch.

The next meeting of the Special Committee on Small Business Development and Job Creation will be held Thursday, February 2, 2012 at 1pm in room 406 of the Coverdell Legislative Office Building.

Help Lead the Charge Today!

The Georgia Republican Party is fully committed to electing a Republican President in 2012. However, Victory won’t be achieved simply because we won the last elections. Victory can only be achieved by working hard each and every day to win the next elections. With President Obama committed to raising $1 billion for his reelection, we have a lot of work to do. A $1-billion campaign means about $1.858 million for every electoral vote, which works out to about $30 million here in Georgia alone.

There’s too much at stake to leave the election of 2012 to chance. And that means there’s too much at stake to wait until 2012 to get started. Please consider contributing $15, $25, $50 or any amount to help Georgia do its part to send Barack Obama back to Chicago!
